How to Write Better eBay Titles
Build clear eBay titles from verified product facts. Includes practical templates, rewrite examples, seller-review safeguards, and a measurement plan.
How to Write Better eBay Titles
An eBay title should identify the exact item quickly. It is not a place for invented demand data, unrelated synonyms, or claims that a rewrite will guarantee rank or sales.
Start with the product facts a buyer needs to distinguish your listing, then use the available title space without sacrificing accuracy or readability.
A practical title framework {#framework}
A useful starting order is:
[Brand] + [Product type] + [Model or part number] + [Important specification] + [Size or capacity] + [Color] + [Condition]Not every item needs every field. Use the attributes that identify this product and matter in its category.
Examples:
- Electronics: Sony Walkman WM-FX101 Portable Cassette Player AM/FM Tested - Clothing: Patagonia Womens Better Sweater Jacket Size M Gray Full Zip - Parts: Ford F-150 Right Tail Light OEM Part Number [verified number] Used - Books: [Title] [Author] [Edition] Hardcover ISBN [verified ISBN] Used
Treat examples as structures, not product data. Replace every placeholder and remove any attribute that is not true.
Put identifying information first {#ordering}
Titles can be truncated in search results and on smaller screens. Put the product type and the facts that distinguish it near the beginning.
Prefer:
Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra 256GB Black Unlocked Used
Over:
LOOK AMAZING CHEAP PHONE Samsung Black S23!!!
The first version identifies the item. The second spends space on promotional language and still leaves important facts unclear.
Use eBay and seller data honestly {#research}
eBay autocomplete can suggest wording to investigate, but an autocomplete phrase is not proof of search volume, competition, conversion, or future demand.
For a stronger review:
Do not copy another seller's title blindly. It may contain a wrong model, unsupported brand, irrelevant synonym, or condition claim that does not apply to your item.
Remove filler and risky wording {#remove}
Usually remove:
- Repeated words and synonyms - “LOOK,” “WOW,” “MUST SEE,” or excessive punctuation - Unrelated brands or product types - Shipping claims that the handling workflow cannot support - “Authentic,” “certified,” or “guaranteed” without evidence - Compatibility that has not been checked - Condition language that conflicts with eBay's selected condition
Abbreviations are useful only when buyers in the category understand them and the shortened text remains accurate.
Category templates {#templates}

Vague electronics title
Before: sony tape player vintage After: Sony Walkman WM-FX101 Portable Cassette Player AM/FM Radio TestedThe rewrite adds a verified model, product type, feature, and test status. It does not claim a traffic or sales lift.
Promotional clothing title
Before: WOW NICE BLACK DRESS MUST SEE After: Zara Womens Black Midi Dress Size M Sleeveless Cocktail UsedThe rewrite replaces promotion with brand, department, item type, size, color, style, and condition.
Ambiguous part title
Before: Ford light fits lots of trucks After: Ford F-150 Right Tail Light [verified part number] UsedAdd model-year fitment only after checking a reliable compatibility source for the exact part number.
Test title changes safely {#testing}
Do not create duplicate listings merely to run an informal title test; duplicates can introduce policy and inventory problems.
Instead:
Seasonality, price, inventory, promotions, seller performance, and buyer demand can all influence the result. A title tool cannot guarantee rank, impressions, clicks, price, or sales.
Using ListTune's title tools {#listtune}
ListTune can draft a title from seller-provided product details and show the proposed wording for review. It does not have a live eBay search-volume feed, and generated titles can contain mistakes. Confirm every product fact before publishing.
The public eBay title builder can be used without connecting an eBay account. The ListTune Free plan includes 25 optimizations per month with no credit card. Current paid plans are listed on the pricing page.
